WORLD PHARMACISTS DAY 2026: THE PHARMACIST CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO REMAIN BEHIND THE COUNTER
Today, September 25, pharmacists around the world mark World Pharmacists Day 2026 under a theme that is becoming increasingly difficult for the profession to ignore: “Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures.”
The theme was chosen by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) as a call for governments, regulators, health systems and the public to give pharmacists the skills, recognition, funding and working environment needed to contribute fully to healthcare.
But there is another side to the message.
Pharmacists themselves must also be prepared to evolve.
Healthcare is no longer the same world in which pharmacy was built around dispensing medicines. Digital health, artificial intelligence, antimicrobial resistance, chronic diseases, ageing populations and the growing demand for accessible primary healthcare are changing what patients need.
The pharmacist of the future may be expected to do much more than hand over a pack of medicine.
From vaccination and health screening to medication reviews, chronic disease support, pharmacovigilance, antimicrobial stewardship and patient education, pharmacy is increasingly moving towards a more patient-centred model.
Digital technology will also change the profession. Electronic records, telepharmacy, digital medication management and responsible use of artificial intelligence will require pharmacists to develop new competencies while protecting patient privacy and maintaining professional judgement.
FIP has also emphasised that pharmacists need supportive legislation, sustainable funding, competency-based education, integration into health systems and greater public recognition if they are to practise to their full potential.
For Nigeria, the conversation is particularly important.
Millions of Nigerians already encounter pharmacists and community pharmacies before they encounter hospitals. The question is whether the healthcare system will properly integrate this workforce into primary care, prevention, medicines optimisation and public health, with clear professional boundaries and appropriate regulation.
Pharmacists, however, must also look inward.
Lifelong learning cannot remain optional. Clinical knowledge, digital health, leadership, communication, research, public health and emerging therapies are becoming increasingly important to modern pharmacy practice.
World Pharmacists Day should therefore be more than another celebration, banner or photograph.
It should be a moment to ask a difficult question:
ARE WE PREPARING THE PHARMACIST FOR THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM OF TOMORROW, OR ARE WE TRAINING PHARMACISTS TO SOLVE YESTERDAY’S PROBLEMS?
Empower the pharmacist.
Transform pharmacy practice.
Strengthen the health system.
And ultimately, put the patient at the centre.
