RED FLAG WARNING: Why Nigerians Must Stay Clear of Paypointapp.africa
Navigating the fintech space in Nigeria requires a lot of vigilance. While genuine digital banks and payment apps make life easy, bad actors are constantly setting up traps to steal hard-earned money.
A serious warning is currently making the rounds regarding a platform operating under the domain Paypointapp.africa. If you are considering opening an account with them, or if you already have one, you need to read this immediately and protect your funds.
The Scam: How the Paypointapp.africa Trap Works
According to reports from affected users, the platform operates on a highly malicious model designed to trap and completely sever you from your money. The exit scam sequence follows a specific pattern:
The Bait: They entice you to open a digital banking or wallet account on their platform, providing you with a customized bank account number to receive transfers.
The Trap: The moment you use that assigned bank account to receive a substantial amount of money, the trap springs. They instantly place an artificial hold on your funds, preventing you from transferring or withdrawing a single Naira.
The Wipeout: When you attempt to log in to complain or resolve the issue, you will find that your login credentials have been entirely deleted from their database. It will appear as though your account never existed.
The Bitter Reality: By deleting your credentials, they completely cut off your access to proof of funds inside their app. Your money is effectively gone, and their customer support channels disappear or block you entirely.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
Fraudulent platforms like this usually share identical warning signs. Before you trust any new fintech app with your money, look out for these indicators:
Lack of CBN/NDIC Regulation: Legitimate payment apps in Nigeria are licensed as Mobile Money Operators (MMOs) or Microfinance Banks by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and are insured by the NDIC. Scam platforms completely lack these regulatory backings.
Anonymous or Missing Ownership Structure: If you cannot easily find the registered physical address, the board of directors, or the parent company of a financial app on the CAC (Companies Commission) portal, do not give them your money.
Wiping Account History: No real financial institution "deletes" user credentials over a transaction issue. Real banks lock accounts for security or compliance verification, but your profile and statement history remain intact. Total deletion is a classic sign of an exit scam.
What to Do If You’ve Already Been Affected
If you have already fallen victim to this platform, do not just sit back. Take these immediate steps to fight back:
Trace the Source Bank: Find out which commercial bank or licensed fintech actually hosts the virtual account number they gave you (e.g., Wema, Providus, Moniepoint). Contact that source bank’s fraud unit immediately to report that the account is being used for fraudulent purposes.
Report to FCID: File an official complaint with the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) or the EFCC. Provide them with the transaction receipts showing the money you sent to the platform.
Warn Others: Share your experience on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. Tag relevant financial authorities to raise maximum awareness and prevent more Nigerians from losing their life savings.
Spread the word: Do not use, trust, or download anything from Paypointapp.africa. Protect your money!
