Academic, Political Leader Hon. Dr. Reginald Chidi Onwuka Honoured with Comprehensive Citation for Service to Etche National
PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE — Distinguished scholars, traditional rulers, political leaders, and community stakeholders gathered to honour scholar, educator, and political leader Hon. Dr. Reginald Chidi Onwuka following the presentation of an official citation celebrating his lifetime contributions to research, public service, and community development.
The citation, collated and presented by Dr. Ukaegbu Hanson Manuabuchi of the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Uyo, highlighted Dr. Onwuka’s journey from his roots in Umuechem, to becoming a prominent academic and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Etche Local Government Area.
Early Life and Academic Milestone
Born on July 19, 1978, in Umuogo Community, Umuechem, Dr. Onwuka began his education at Community Primary School, Umuechem, before completing his secondary studies at Community Secondary School, Ulakwo Etche, in 1994, where he served as Senior Prefect.
He pursued Computer Science at the former Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori, before obtaining a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering from Rivers State University in 2002. Following his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployment in Jigawa State (2003–2004), Dr. Onwuka advanced his post-graduate studies, obtaining a Postgraduate Diploma, an M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics, and capping his academic journey in 2025 with a Ph.D. in Agricultural Resource and Environmental Economics (with Distinction) from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt.

As a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Dr. Onwuka’s academic work focuses heavily on solving pressing regional challenges in the Niger Delta, particularly the impact of environmental degradation on local agriculture.

Crude Oil Pollution Impacts (2024–2025): Published extensively on the causes of oil spills and their direct economic consequences for crop productivity and farmlands in crude oil-polluted areas of Rivers State.

Alongside his academic career, Dr. Onwuka has remained a prominent figure in grass-roots politics in Rivers State. Having served in various strategic capacities—including as a Caretaker Committee member (2015), Caretaker Secretary for the All Progressives Congress in Etche (2018), and Caretaker Chairman for the PDP in Etche (2024)—he currently serves as the substantive Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Etche Local Government Area.
Beyond party politics, Dr. Onwuka’s philanthropic impact includes:
Cultural Preservation: Founding the annual Etche Bole Fiesta in 2019, a cultural and socio-economic platform designed to foster unity, youth entrepreneurship, and local heritage.

Personal Life and Legacy
Dr. Onwuka is married to Mrs. Ada Gift Reginald Chidi Onwuka, and they are blessed with four children: Chisom, Ogechukwu, Kamsi, and Special Chizitere. He is a committed member of the Anglican Communion, worshiping at St. Clement Anglican Church, Umuechem.
